DAVID CROCKETT STEAM FIRE COMPANY No. 1

The new red brick fire station in the City of Gretna takes its design cues from the cotton presses that once dotted the Mississippi River. The main design constraint was integrating a new piece of critical infrastructure into an historic residential neighborhood. Maintaining proportions so as to visually keep the scale of the building close to that of nearby buildings, placing the administration building on the corner and setting the larger apparatus building back, gives the station a prominent, yet neighborly, presence. In addition to serving the daily functions of a first-responder fire station, it incorporates features that allow it to serve as a recovery-center after a hurricane.
